Editing workshop 1
Today we had an editing workshop with Matt where we learnt how to use the software Adobe Premiere Pro.
This is this software that we will be using to edit our opening title sequences.
When editing you should save your work constantly in case your computer crashes or the software stops working.
When the raw footage is put onto the computer they are called rushes.
Once you have watched all of the raw footage, make a folder with the folder icon and call it log bin. In editing folders are called bins as this is what used to be used when films were shot in physical film strips
You then copy and paste the rushes which you want to use into the log bin.
The cutting tool is for shortening videosAnd cutting out the beginning of the end which you don't want to keep, the tool for this is the Razor tool. Or you can press command k.
In and out shots are to mark where you want the shot to start and end. You use the scrubbing tool until the line is where you want to to start the shot and then press command I. Then wherever you want the shot to end you would press Command O.
The + and - keys on the timeline allow you to zoom in and out of the timeline, which is where you drag the shots you want to use.
In premiere Pro there are four different panels, the timeline, the project panel, source panel and programme panel.
The timeline is where the project that you are working on is and where you can see the audio and video channels that you have chosen to be in your film.
The project panel is where the rushes and the raw footage is stored in bins.
The programme and source panels show the video, one is the video selected in the timeline and one is the video selected in the programme panel. This is so you can compare where the shot is going in and out of and easily get the right frame.
Shot list
This is a shot list that I made with my group in the order that we are going to shoot.
We have done it so in the order of the people that we need, so we are doing the close ups at the end so the actors don't have to hang around waiting for us to film them and they can go after they have finished their part.
Costume - What the actors are bringing
As the actors clothes won't be getting fake blood on them, we have asked them to wear a plain black hoodie and jeans, and plain black trainers.
This is a picture of the hoodie Fred is going to wear:

Camera workshop 2
It is very rare for films to be shot completely in chronological order, as it is not very practical, especially if there are lots of cuts between two different locations. Therefore all the shots in one location are usually done and then you move onto the next one. The same with the actors, if actors are only needed for 2 shots but they are far apart in the storyline, they would shoot them at the same time.
Firstly you would shoot a wide shot of every action, and then a mid shot, then close ups. You always start with a wide shot as it acts as a 'safety shot' so if anything goes wrong you still have the shot, as if you started with a close up you would only have this part of the footage instead of the whole picture.
Continuity is also very important. It means keeping everything the same in each take of the shot/each angle. It helps create the illusion that everything is happening at the same time from shot to shot. For example if someone is picking something up then they use the same hand every time.
Call outs are used when staring and ending a shot, they are to let everyone know what is happening clearly and quickly. These are the ones we discussed:
- Standby (film crew and cast get into their positions ready to start the shot)
- Standing by (film crew says this when they are ready to start)
- Roll camera (director says this to film crew to instruct them to start recording)
- Rolling camera (film crew confiriming that the camera is recording)
- Action (Cast start the scene)
- Cut (instruction to stop recording)
The reason you start recoding before the scene starts and keep rolling afterwards is to make sure the camera is recoding, and that you don't cut any action off at the end.
You should never watch footage back on set as this wastes a lot of time. It is also because if the actors see themselves in footage they may get self conscious and act differently.
We recapped the 180 degree rule, it is a technique to help the audience know where everybody is and who is who. It is when an imaginary line is drawn between two subjects and then the camera can be placed anywhere as long as it stays one side of that line. If you were to cross that line it would make the shot confusing and the audience may not know where the characters are, what they are looking at/talking to and who is who. This rule means that, if there are two people talking to each other, one is always shown on the right, and one always on the left.
Rule of thirds is when you place the focus point of the image on certain points in the frame in order to draw the attention to it and make it a lot more interesting.
The rule of thirds is made up of four lines, and each point where the lines cross is a focus point. So it is a point of interest.
We then had a go at shooting a small sequence to get used to using the camera and these rules, there are some pictures from this above.
Location Update
We have decided to use the studio at school for our location - and we are just going to set it up with all our props and everything.

Prop - Making the corkboard
To make the corkboard I printed out mug shots from the internet to show that the doctor has done this with other people, I also used some anatomy diagrams to set the tone and narrative.
I plan to put lines between the people and the parts of the body, showing where the chip is in each one etc.

Workshop 1 - setting up the camera
Today we had a technical workshop where we were shown the cameras we will be using for our opening sequence and learnt how to set them up and the basics of how to use them.
The name of the camera we still be using is 'Black magic 4k mini URSA' camera.
Firstly we took out the tripod and set it up, there are 6 catches to adjust the height of it. We were told that it is better to fully extend the bottom adjustors first as otherwise the tripod would be very top heavy when trying to adjust it.
You then attach the handle onto the right hand side of the tripod.
To put the camera on it there is a button and a lever to lock it into place. It slides on so you need to be careful that the lock isn't out as there will be a piece of metal blocking the track.
After the Camera is on the tripod you need to level it (also known as bubbling). You do this by turning the knob on the bottom of the tripod and adjusting the camera until the bubble is in the middle of the spirit level.
The pan and tilt locks are on the tripod, the tilt one is on the bottom and the pan one is on the left hand side.
We talked about a rule called the 'mine' and 'yours' rule which is used when passing a camera from one person to another. When you pass it to someone you say 'yours' so the other person knows they now have responsibility over it, and when they feel they are holding it, they say mine. It is to prevent any dropping by misunderstanding who is holding the camera.
The focus and zoom rings are on the lens, and before you start shooting you should focus the camera by zooming all the way in, focusing on small detail (for example an eye), and then zooming out to the shot.
